BigTent Leadership
Donna Novitsky, CEO
As an active community member and executive, Donna is passionate about providing a world class platform that is the “go to” place for local communities. Donna joined BigTent from Mohr, Davidow Ventures where she was a Partner for almost nine years, helping startups lay the foundation for market success. Prior to MDV, Donna was VP of Marketing at Clarify Inc., a successful enterprise software startup that she helped build from zero to $100M revenue and was listed on the NASDAQ. She started her career in product management at Sun Microsystems. Donna teaches Global Entrepreneurial Marketing in the School of Engineering at Stanford University. She enjoys playing with her two children and husband and is on their school Foundation board. She is a former board member of the Children's Discovery Museum of San Jose.

Laney Whitcanack, Co-Founder and COO
Laney’s career has focused on innovating online and offline ways to connect people with communities they care about. Taking notice of the scarcity of good and cheap technology to support groups and being part of 27 Yahoo! Groups herself, Laney co-founded BigTent in 2006. She spent the decade previous to BigTent coaching and training hundreds of community leaders, in the US and Mexico, most recently as the Director of Community Programs for the Coro Center for Civic Leadership. While at Coro Laney co-founded The Princess Project in 2002, which engages thousands of girls and women across California each year in volunteer opportunities. A published author and speaker on entrepreneurship and community organizing, Laney received the Jefferson Award for Public Service in 2008. She is currently a board member of Zeum: San Francisco’s Children’s Museum and The Princess Project and is involved in even more community groups after the birth of her daughter, Campbell, last year.

Vicki Luisi, SVP Sales
Vicki has a proven track record in leading pinnacle sales teams, executive management, high-level marketing and communications, and full-scale, successful execution. Well-versed in broadcast and online media from a fifteen year sales career with ClearChannel and CBS media, she has managed sales teams of up to 90 people and $90M in revenue. As a hands-on executive, Vicki loves crafting effective marketing and sales programs that generate excellent results for her clients. Vicki has been a board member of multiple organizations, including The Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) Foundation and United Way Corporate Leadership Program. Vicki enjoys hiking, yoga, and spending time with friends and family.

Jay Joichi, VP User Experience
Jay, a 12-year veteran of the interactive industry, brings experience in design strategy, customer research and experience planning to develop useful and usable experiences for interactive applications. He has a passion for developing applications that help communities thrive and grow. Before joining BigTent, Jay was a Director of Strategy at Organic; the Experience Planning Director at Arc Worldwide/ Leo Burnett, leading their San Francisco user experience team; and a founding partner of Sense, a San Francisco-based experience design firm. Jay has developed online experiences for companies like Visa, Symantec, Samsung, Behr Paint, Levi Strauss, Charles Schwab, Subimo (now WebMD) and the Screen Actors Guild. Jay has published and presented numerous works on customer research and user experience design at conferences and universities.
— Jay holds a Master of Design in Strategic Design Planning from the Institute of Design, Illinois Institute of Technology and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Visual Communications from Northern Illinois University.
Rufus McLain, VP Community
With a decade of marketing experience, Rufus' expertise is about groups and making communiteis thrive online. Whether it’s a small neighborhood moms’ group or a 1,000-member branded community, Rufus is able to understand the group’s dynamic, increase members’ engagement and make these groups an essential part of people’s lives. Prior to BigTent, Rufus was the marketing lead for Yahoo! Groups, where he focused on user engagement, new user acquisition, and customer research. His previous experiences also include working for software start-ups in the telecommunications and engineering fields where he did marketing and web-development. In his free time, Rufus enjoys travel, yoga, and surfing the Internet.

Javier Vegas, Senior Director Engineering
Javier joined BigTent from Bebo, where he served as the Technical Lead of the API Platform team. He brings to BigTent over 20 years of engineering experience, having served in senior technical roles at companies including Trymedia (acquired by Macrovision), Sitematic (acquired by Netobjects) and Todovino.com. Javier is a big fan of his bicycle and good wine. He is fluent in English, French, and Spanish.

BigTent Team
Andy Salvas
Andy spent almost 20 years in broadcast (radio) advertising sales in a variety of local and national sales and management positions before BigTent. He is excited to be working for a rapidly growing digital platform that offers marketers many different ways to engage an influential audience. He volunteers a lot of time coaching youth baseball and basketball, and can still get up and down the court pretty well. He also likes to ski, kayak and fish - pretty much anything that happens outside.

Caroline Barlerin
Caroline joins BigTent with over a decade of management and leadership experience in both for-profit and nonprofit organizations. She spent several years at leading branding firms before taking on the managing director role at Level Playing Field Institute, a nonprofit focused on access to higher education and inclusive workplaces. She is the founding architect of Taproot Foundation where she currently sits on the board.
— Caroline holds a B.A. in sociology from Vassar College and was recently a Sloan Fellow at the Stanford Graduate School of Business where she received a M.Sc. in Management.
CJ Close
CJ brings a wealth of experience to BigTent in the area of marketing to women. She joins BigTent from the magazine publishing field where she developed and implemented integrated marketing and advertising programs to clients nationwide. She spent the last 13 years crafting her skills at Conde Nast Magazines where she worked at Vogue, Glamour and Cookie and prior to that at Time Inc. Magazines in Corporate Marketing as well as Entertainment Weekly and People Magazines. When she isn't meeting with BigTent clients she is equally busy living a full family life with her husband and two year old.

Diane Hoelter
Before joining BigTent, Diane served as the president of the San Bruno Mothers Club (SBMC) and worked as an elementary school substitute teacher. Diane had such a great time helping her mothers' club transition to BigTent that she jumped at the chance to join the BigTent team as a Community Coach. When Diane isn't helping new groups and their members learn about BigTent, she enjoys testing and reviewing (and buying) all the latest electronic gadgets. Diane is a mom of three wonderful kids.

Jaine Murphy
Jaine is a nester and loves to make things her own. When Jaine and her daughter first moved to San Diego, Jaine started a playgroup. Blessed with a baby never content to stay home, she tried to create a group that stimulated the babies as well as supported the new moms on their exciting adventure. BigTent made a huge difference in the running of the group — and it thrived. So thrilled by the product BigTent is putting out, Jaine wants to tell everyone she meets about it. Currently, Jaine is excited to have a solid nest and a paycheck to add twigs to it.

Jenn Chen
Jenn's fascination with design, people, technology, and connections between all of the above has led her to BigTent. Previously, she worked as a user experience designer/analyst for Overstock.com, did HCI research at Stanford's CHIMe (Communication between Humans and Interactive Media) lab, and worked on various commissioned and personal design projects. Other than that, Jenn is also a radio DJ, amateur food photographer, cupcake baker, and tree-hugger.

Joycelyn Chung
Joycelyn is a native of San Francisco. Fiercely proud of her alma mater (go Aggies!), Joycelyn has the animal kingdom's equivalent of the Brady Bunch — three cats and three dogs. She previously worked at various companies including The Gap, The Topaz Project, and Archetype, and she joins BigTent out of interest for its benefits to community groups.

Julia Tran
Julia brings to BigTent her experience as a project manager in the fields of social entrepreneurship and international development. She has a particular passion for market research and figuring out how best to meet people's needs. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, reading, photography, and movies. She is a sucker for food buffets and learning foreign languages.

Laralynn Weiss Rapoza
Lynn comes to BigTent with over a decade of experience in all facets of online content. Past stints include working as a web writer for WaMu, an online strategist for Wells Fargo, the Director of Content for TechTV.com, and a writer/producer for the mid-90s startup Atevo Travel. A mom and stepmom of two young kids and also a published author, Lynn laughs at the idea of "free" time. She spends off-work hours juggling the endlessly lovable carnival of family, friends, writing, and travel — which includes trips to everywhere from South America to the local park.

Liang Huang
Before joining BigTent, Liang worked most recently as a senior engineer at KickApps, working on the YUKU social network. Besides his experience scaling social networks with KickApps and Gorilla Mobile, Liang’s diverse experiences include working at the National Center for Computational Hydro-Science and Engineering, where he designed and developed a Chemical Spill Incident Database. For fun, Liang enjoys playing Wii, traveling in Northern California and spending time with his wife.

Mia Lee
At The Stanford Daily, Mia spent three years generating catchy leads for women's tennis articles prior to pursuing equally alluring marketing leads for BigTent. This experience instilled in her a passion for communicating complex events in a way that all audiences can appreciate. Mia has been involved with several community organizations, including the East Palo Alto Charter School and the Stanford Women's Leadership Conference. In her spare time, Mia loves a good tennis match and exploring the great outdoors.

Michelle Harrison
Michelle joins BigTent after working in fundraising for the non-profit general fund at U.C. Berkeley. At Cal, she connected Berkeley alumni with the university community to support students. Her interest in promoting the success of community-based groups through the use of technology brought her to BigTent, in spite of the presence of many Stanford grads! In her free time, Michelle loves to travel, act, and hang out with her family's dog, cats, and horses.

Pearl Wu
Pearl likes citrus fruits, dancing, languages, and pondering solutions to difficult questions. Joining BigTent as a QA engineer has reconnected her with her fascination for virtual spaces. Pearl's love for community building was largely shaped by her year-long stint as social manager of a wacky, beloved student co-op on Stanford campus, the Enchanted Broccoli Forest. In the past, she has done web design work for her former school district, a day trading company, a literary agency, and of course her own pet projects.

Rosa Terrazas
Previous to working at BigTent, Rosa was the Associate Director of the Office of Community Service Learning at San Francisco State University (SFSU). At SFSU, Rosa cultivated partnerships with nonprofits and community groups and created and maintained the Office's website. During a year-long hiatus from SFSU, Rosa was a Coro Fellow in Public Affairs, completing several projects for diverse organizations including the McKesson Corporation, the San Francisco Firefighters, and the California Public Utilities Commission. Rosa stays involved with Coro by serving on its Board of Directors.

Sharima Rasanayagam
In her former lives, Sharima has been a lab scientist, field researcher, UK diplomat, environmental policy expert and full time mother. She led the UK Science and Technology Team for the West Coast of the US for 4 years and was the founding Executive Director of the UC Berkeley Institute of the Environment. She was introduced to Big Tent as a member of the Golden Gate Mothers Group and wanted to know more - now she works here! When not in the office, Sharima wrangles with two kids and a crazy dog. When she gets the chance, she goes scuba diving - and is excited to have logged her 100th dive!
— Sharima has a PhD in Microbiology from the University of Kent at Canterbury in the UK.
William Lee
Before joining BigTent, William spent five years at eBay doing software development. After spending most of his career at a 10,000-employee company, William is thrilled to be in the dynamic world of start-ups. William's leisure pursuits include travel, visiting art museums, writing about rock concerts, and winning cash and prizes.

Debby Meredith
Debby has more than 20 years of experience managing product engineering teams and introducing new technologies to the market. She served in VP engineering roles at AOL, Netscape and Collabra Software, plus a myriad of interim VP engineering positions in Internet startups such as Friendster, Good Technology and Efficient Frontier. Given her broad set of operational skills and venture capital experience, Debby helps BigTent to assemble world-class engineering teams and deliver great internet products. She holds a MS in CS from Stanford University.
Fiona Wilson
Currently on the faculty of the Simmons School of Management, Fiona is interested in how technology intersects with social entrepreneurship. Her experience includes serving as VP of Marketing for CMGI (the Internet Investment & Development company) and Ogilvy & Mather Advertising in senior Media Research, Media Planning and International Account Management roles. Fiona is currently pursuing her doctorate in strategy and policy at the Boston University School of Management. Active in the community, she has served as a volunteer and board member for many non-profit organizations and loves hanging out with her two year old daughter.
Julie Herendeen
An Internet early bird, Julie advises BigTent on business and marketing strategy. Most recently, Julie held several executive positions at Yahoo!, including VP of Ad Solutions and VP of Network Products which included community offerings as well as the Yahoo! front page. Prior to Yahoo! she was VP of Marketing at Shutterfly and Senior Director of Products at Netscape. She began her career as a product manager at Apple. Julie holds an MBA from Harvard and BA from University of California at Berkeley.
Kristen Hughes
Kristen helps drive requirements for BigTent to help parents coordinate their family, community, and professional lives. Kristen has held business development positions in Bay Area software companies, was a venture capitalist at Morgan Stanley Venture Partners, and is currently a corporate development executive at EMC Corporation. A working mother of two, she is also an occasional volunteer at her children's school.
Lisa Nash
Lisa is passionate about consumer marketing and has over twenty years of experience building brands and growing successful companies. She has had a hand in building up the product lines, databases, and marketing capabilities of companies like Yahoo!, E*TRADE, Charles Schwab, VISA and American Express. Most recently, Lisa has used her experience to launch Prosper.com and LN Marketing Associates, her own strategic marketing consulting company. In her free time, Lisa volunteers with several organizations that focus on empowering women worldwide.
Lori Laub Sinclair
Lori is passionate about customer satisfaction and plays a role advising BigTent on how to ensure a great customer experience in all dimensions. She has held executive positions as Vice President of Customer Care for Great Plains Software, Intuit Corporation, and Vantive Corporation and was Chief Information Officer at Remedy Corporation. She is the co-author of Delivering World Class Technical Support and an active volunteer in her son's school, her local community, the American Cancer Society, and the Canary Foundation.

Aimee Moss
Aimee is interested in how online communities can complement and enhance offline communities, make lives easier for parents, and help volunteers utilize their time in the most efficient way possible, so as to combat "volunteer fatigue." A mother of two young children and an active volunteer with her local mothers' club and homeowners' association, Aimee has first hand experience juggling it all. She graduated magna cum laude from Smith College with a B.A. in education and a teaching credential and worked in educational administration before leaving the paid workforce to start a family.
Glennia Campbell
Glennia is a writer who blogs about her family's travel adventures at The Silent I and is a contributor to Kimchi Mamas and the Silicon Valley Moms Blog. She is the mother of a six-year-old son, and currently works full-time as a contract officer for Stanford University. A graduate of Barnard College and Northwestern University, Glennia has spent her professional career as a lawyer specializing in contracts and intellectual property. A life-long volunteer, Glennia has served as President of the Parents' Club of Palo Alto & Menlo Park (PAMP) and is currently a member of the Board of Directors.
Laura Puryear
Laura is excited to help BigTent find ways to build better communities among mothers. Laura has spent the past nine years at Bain & Company since graduating from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business. She is currently on a leave of absence after recently having relocated to Charlotte, NC. As a mom to three young daughters, she is an active volunteer with her daughter's school and with her church.
Lee Rumaner
Lee is President of Ainsworth Elementary School PTA in Portland, Oregon. The PTA has a mission to advocate for students and involve parents in their children's education. As part of this effort, the PTA manages a BigTent group that is open to all family and staff members of the school. Lee is a husband and father of three. In his spare time, he works as a process engineer for the Intel Corporation.
Maria Nicolacakis
Maria is active in many parent-related groups and is excited about Big Tent's efforts to help families stay organize. She has worked in government community relations, high-tech public relations and non-profit business development. Now, as a full time mother of two, Maria enjoys active involvement with her family and several cultural, educational and philanthropic organizations. She is currently a board member of the Coro Center for Civic Leadership and co-chairs the annual San Francisco Greek Film Festival.

Marianne Wu
Marianne is a Partner at Mohr, Davidow Ventures, focusing on Clean Tech investments. A parent, she was in on the ground floor conceptualizing BigTent. Prior to joining MDV, Marianne was Vice President of Marketing at ONI Systems where she was responsible for product strategy and market development. Earlier in her career, Marianne was a consultant at McKinsey and Company. Marianne earned both her doctoral and master's degrees from the School of Engineering at Stanford University and her bachelor's in Applied Science at the University of British Columbia.
Mary Beth Hazelgrove
Mary Beth is the current president of Preemies Today, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide outreach and support programs to families affected by prematurity from birth through childhood. Mary Beth brings valuable educational and grass roots development experience to the organization. Previously, she taught elementary school and served in the Peace Corps. Mary Beth is married and the mother of two girls, ages six and four. Her own elder daughter was born 14 weeks premature.
Philippa Slayton
Philippa is a leader of Fremont Block Watch Network (FBWN), a non-profit organization that supports Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) efforts, promotes block watch best practices, and keeps the Fremont community in touch with day-to-day security concerns. Philippa is passionate about neighborhood groups. She sees enormous potential for such volunteer-driven groups to collaborate online and market to other groups interested in CERT, crime prevention, and community building. Through her own experience with BigTent, Philippa is excited to see users finding more creative ways to use the online platform to achieve better solutions.
Valerie Grabiel
Valerie is a firm believer in the power of communities to educate, support, and strengthen individuals and is eager to bring the organizing tools of BigTent to the heart of communities at the playground and beyond. She has over nine years experience leading marketing and community outreach initiatives on the national and grassroots level for WGBH, the nation's flagship public television station, her neighborhood community development organization Main Streets, and the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles. A recent MBA graduate from the Simmons School of Management, Valerie lives in Jamaica Plain, MA and is a new mother.
